Songwriting: How To Do It?

Songwriting: Step by Step

Hi everyone! How are you?
I'm going to tell you about the songwriting.

I'm Chris Nolasce and today I bring you a very special topic which I will help you deal. Pay close attention!

Well, let's start!

First of all we have to define what a songwriting is.

Songwriting refers to the action of writing the words or musically said "lyrics" of a song which can be about different topics, for instance, love, hate, tricks, or uniquly fantasy and imagination for entertainment, and so on.

Now, the most common statements that beginners in music and composition make are "it's too difficult...", or "I want to know how to do it.", or "it's more about rhyming and I don't know how to do it.", well, yes, it's about rhyming but not only that. Remember that the most men's difficulty had been to fly like birds but now we have planes, so it's just about finding the way and help if need when trying to write the lyrics of a new song.

Don't ever say it's difficult, "difficult" is just a self-denial that leads you to stop chasing your dreams and make your head think something or anything is "impossible" to be done by yourself. So remember not to mention that word, "difficult"... for us it's going to be a "forbidden word".

Now let's talk abou how to write a hit song: Step by step

Sometimes we have that kind of strange sound or music in our minds but we don't know how to put the lyrics and rhythm so it can sound cool, we try to get beutiful and rhyming words to complete or get started the song but then, when we start writing a verse or two, we supposedly realize we are doing it wrong and get to throw our draft away thinking it's useless. I invite you to follow this steps.

Step 1: Listen to many varied music

Listening to music, mostly varied, opens your mind and gives you more ideas of what your song/s could be about. The more you listen to different music, the more your creations can be impregnated with originality and authenticity. You will notice several kinds of music genres and then you will be able to opt for one for your creation.

Step 2: Read

When you read you get more knowledge and more words where to pick. Read a lot, mostly poetry. Study the loudness of each new word you learn and enjoy their sound.

Step 3: Analyze the structure of your favorite songs

Analyze each of your favorite music genres and the popular songs ranging with those genres. What is their structure, or in other words, how are they formed?

The typical form of structure of a song is:
  • Stanza/verse
  • Chorus
  • Stanza/verse
  • Chorus
  • Musical bridge
  • Closing (the last chorus)
But it could also be like this:

  • Introduction
  • Stanza/verse
  • Pre-chorus
  • Chorus
  • Stanza/verse
  • Pre-chorus
  • Chorus
  • Musical bridge
  • Closing (the last chorus)
This type of structure is commonly used in Rock.

Or this simplest way:

  • Chorus
  • Stanza/verse
  • Chorus
  • Stanza/verse

Step 4: Write as much as you can

Just like running, jumping or singing, you just have to write considering what we have seen so far. Don't throw any draft away, they are all use for other songs you want to create. There are no bad ideas, but only small mistakes. Think you want to tell a story. You don't have to be clear of what you want to tell but just do it and put those thoughts in a draft.

Write your songs on a special notebook, your tablet or computer and save them carefully. So that you don't forget about the rhythm or what tone your song is sung, record your voice singing it and save it with a specific name which commonly comes from the chorus (as the most repeated or sticky word or phrase). Record yourself singing as it comes to you. Don't judge it. It can be a hum, a melody, a melody already with lyrics, a sequence of chords, a riff, and in some cases, the whole song may appear to you. As always, you can come back later and start working and polishing it.

Copy. No kidding! Copy.It is what everyone does to make their popular hits, but, copy only what you need, the way the artists rhyme, how they sing, what they sing about, so you'll know what you're going to do, so your ideas will sprout from your heart and head.

Step 5: Study music but be careful

You have better study some music to write your songs but, how much? As it's songwriting, study and practice the structure of the songs and its variations, the genres, instrumens like piano or guitar if need, but study and practice.

Step 6: Trust yourself and your subconscious

Creating is an act of faith. From writinga song to writing this article for you. Belive you can do it, spread your wings and fly away. Dream and think big because since you start writing you will get closer to become a great songwriter.

God bless you!
